New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using these treatments must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
